Durango, CO ? Opening statements were made Wednesday in the trial for a La Plata County man suspected of torturing a dog and assaulting women with whom he was intimately involved.

Prosecutors said Louie Albert Lucero, 51, engaged in a cycle of domestic violence over the course of 12 years involving three women. Two women suffered broken arms, two were branded with a hot iron (one said it was consensual), one had motor oil poured on top of her, and all three were beaten and strangled, said Aaryn Richardson, during opening statements.

Not all incidents have been charged; some reached the statute of limitations ? or exceeded the time limits in which charges can be filed ? but jurors still are expected to hear the details so prosecutors can try to demonstrate a cycle of domestic violence.

Public defense lawyer Katie Telfer said Lucero engaged in relationships that don?t seem normal to most people, but there was nothing illegal ? no nonconsensual abuse. Methamphetamine was involved in the most recent relationship, she said.

?This case is about relationships that are hard for a lot of us to understand,? Telfer said.

The women didn?t report abuse at the time, doctors didn?t have reason to doubt their stories, and no one called authorities to report domestic violence despite claims by prosecutors that they showed signs of domestic violence, Telfer said.

She asked jurors to pay attention to inconsistencies in the women?s statements from then to now.

Lucero is charged with 17 counts, including assault, false imprisonment, motor-vehicle theft and animal cruelty.

He is suspected of hitting a woman?s dog, keeping it chained up during freezing temperatures, stuffing its head into a drain pipe and letting ice-cold water flow over its head and breaking its leg, Richardson said.

The incidents date back as far as 2000 and occurred in La Plata County.
