WASHINGTON (AP) ? Rep. Ron Paul picked up more delegates to the Republican National Convention Tuesday after his supporters reached a compromise over disputed delegates from Louisiana.

The Texas congressman will get 17 of the Louisiana's 46 delegates in the compromise, said Charlie Davis, who served as Paul's campaign chairman in Louisiana. The rest of the state's delegates are expected to support Mitt Romney, the party's presumptive nominee.

A Republican National Committee official confirmed the agreement. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, was not authorized to publicly discuss the negotiations.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum won 10 delegates in Louisiana's primary in March. But Santorum has endorsed Romney and is scheduled to speak at the convention next Tuesday.

Supporters of Paul and Romney clashed at the Louisiana party convention in June and ended up holding dueling conventions, with each group submitting lists of delegates. The two sides reached the compromise Tuesday in Tampa, Fla., the site of next week's national convention.

"I think it's a huge win for our campaign because it showed what happened in Louisiana was wrong," Davis said by phone from Tampa. "It's been a long uphill battle, but the overwhelming evidence was on our side."

Supporters for Paul and Romney also have disputes over delegates in Massachusetts and Maine. Jesse Benton, Paul's chief campaign strategist, said Paul's supporters were close to reaching an agreement on divvying up the delegates from Massachusetts.

"Maine is still unsettled, but talks are continuing and the conversation remains respectful," Benton said in an email.

Jason Dore, executive director of the Republican Party of Louisiana, said party officials are glad to resolve the dispute so they can "unite and work toward nominating our candidate for president next week."

"That's what the purpose of the convention is, not all this infighting," said Dore, who gave up his seat as a delegate in the compromise.

You gotta hand it to a guy who wakes up, checks the weather and decides, Today?s the day to opine about rape! Last month, the comedian Daniel Tosh attempted to silence a heckler at the Laugh Factory, saying, ?Wouldn?t it be funny if that girl got raped by, like, five guys right now? Like right now??

Five weeks and one Twitterst?rm later, put ?Daniel Tosh? into Google. Suggested searches are ?rape joke? and ?Daniel Tosh gay.?

Over the weekend, Rep. Todd Akin of Missouri saw a chance to follow suit and bullocks up his own Google standing on the eve of an election. Pregnancies from rape, Akin said, are scarce because if ?it?s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.?

?Rep. Akin Must Resign? says a paid anti-Akin ad on Google today. That?s the first return on an ?Akin? search. Feminists decried the comment. Democrats did, and Barack Obama. Then Republicans, then Mitt Romney. Now almost everybody wants Akin out of the Missouri Senate race.

Not long ago it seemed that, with the right P.R. operators, the famous could survive almost anything. Since Web 2.0 brought together video and a robust commentariat, it?s one false move and you?re consigned to D Block with comedian Michael Richards and politician George Allen.

Like a pickup artist who worries that his crude wingman has hurt his chances with the ladies, Mitt Romney and other Republicans are said to be furious at Akin for turning off just the women the campaign was trying to woo. Dude! Don?t talk about rape! Girls hate that!

Today, Todd Akin has released a weird ad in which he, in caramel-colored makeup, says he used the wrong words, has daughters, has a good heart, hates rape and hopes we?ll forgive him. The whole spectacle is just undignified and absurd.

Some news outlets have helpfully taken the time to trace the fallacy of Akin?s wacky rape theory, saying that there?s a medieval or frat-house or nuclear-fusion theory that states that women can?t get pregnant during sex they don?t orgasmically enjoy. Uh. OK. The jokes about that make their own selves.

Over on the feminist blogs, including the inspired Feministing, due diligence is being done to run Akin out of town. Pushing way beyond the questions raised by Akin?s cracked opinions, which distinguished politicians has daughters and which one dislikes rape more, the feminist blogs are unsurprised. They represent Akin?and even the men who seek to temper his comments in their own garbled language?as yet more participants in ?rape culture,? the parts of civilization in which, many feminists argue, sexual violence is normative.

Reading these blogs against the mainstream media, you might well want to reprise John Edwards?s notion of ?two Americas.? The twist is that in this election year one America is female and the other male. In the female one, rape?nonconsensual sex as designated by the party that didn?t give consent?is everywhere, wrecking lives and making sexual harmony impossible. In the male America, ?rape? is a subject of jokes and pontification. It?s a trope to be employed wantonly with the boys and judiciously when you?re trying to seduce women.

This second male-America way of thinking about rape?as a subject for humor or political footballery?is probably not going to last long when the intrinsically feminist Internet puts thumbscrews to the weirdos who use it that way. The Republicans are in big trouble today. And Todd Akin, aspiring senator from Missouri, is no doubt not long for this political world.

Maybe Akin was right on one point: The females, it seems, can shut something down. Him.

So, when did New York State Assembly speaker Sheldon Silver start sniffing glue? When I first read about his plan to give illegal immigrants government financial aid for college, I thought it had to be a misprint. In fact, I had to read it twice to make sure it wasn't...

There is a huge difference between legal immigration and illegal immigration. At the same time Silver is proposing giving illegal immigrants financial aid, TAP funding for graduate students is being eliminated. Taxpayers will see right through this nonsense. Clearly, Silver and the Assembly democrats will benefit politically from the influx of illegal residents moving here. And of course, they'll be Silver supporters. Wouldn't you support a guy who just gave you thousands of dollars of free money? Unbelievable.

I have nothing against legal immigrants. We are all descendants of legal immigrants. And I'm not saying they are bad people. Chicago has many Mexican immigrants and they were some of the nicest people you could hope to meet. But seriously. This bill is only going to give more illegal immigrants an incentive to come to New York.

Will Mickey "King of all Studies" Kearns and Dim Kennedy support Silver's crazy bill? Mickey campaigned as the maverick who would stand up to Albany. Well, since he had lunch with Silver, Mickey hasn't been doing as much "standing up".? We know "11,000 Doors" Fahey would have gone along with it. We expect Kennedy to do whatever Brian Higgins tells him to do. But Kearns? Will he be holding a press conference tomorrow announcing his opposition to this plan? Highly doubtful. We will be keeping an eye on this, the toll hike proposed for the truckers, and the raise the state lawmakers are trying to give themselves. Voting Yes to any of these three things is another reason for New Yorkers to flee the state.
