Twitter lifts suspension on user critical of NBC Olympics coverage

Facing an Olympic-sized public backlash, Twitter lifted its suspension of Guy Adams, a Los Angeles-based correspondent for London's Independent who had been highly critical of NBC's coverage of the 2012 London Olympics.

According to Adams, the micro-blogging service?which partnered with NBC for the summer games?alerted him of the reinstatement via email.

"We have just received an update from the complainant retracting their original request," Twitter wrote, according to Adams. "Therefore your account has been unsuspended."

No further was explanation given or apology offered by Twitter, Adams said.

Adams' account was suspended on Sunday, two days after he tweeted the corporate email address of NBC's Olympics president, Gary Zenkel, whom Adams called the "moronic" executive behind the network's decision to tape-delay events for its prime-time U.S. broadcast.

"I didn't publish a private email address, just a corporate one, which is widely available to anyone with access to Google and is identical to one that all of the tens of thousands of NBC Universal employees share," Adams argued. "It's no more 'private' than the address I'm emailing you from right now."

NBC released a statement on Monday confirming that it contacted Twitter.

"We filed a complaint with Twitter because a user tweeted the personal information of one of our executives," the network said. "According to Twitter, this is a violation of their privacy policy. Twitter alone levies discipline."

[Also read: Critic of NBC has Twitter account suspended after network complains]

But according to the Telegraph, it was Twitter that informed NBC of Adams' tweet, not the other way around.

"Our social media [department] was actually alerted to it by Twitter," Christopher McCloskey, NBC Sports vice-president of communications, wrote in an email to the newspaper. "Then we filled out the form and submitted it."

The NBC-Twitter partnership was announced earlier this month before NBC's coverage of the games began.

"During the games, Twitter is using its Olympics events page to highlight insiders' views, and to encourage people to watch NBC's on-air and online coverage," the companies said in a press release.

"If criticizing NBC over how it's handled the Olympic coverage were cause for suspension," Michael Gartenberg, a tech industry analyst for Gartner, quipped, "Twitter would pretty much be empty right about now."

There's been so much criticism of NBC's Olympics tape-delay on Twitter, in fact, a hashtag?#NBCFail?began trending on Saturday, the network's first full day of coverage. And a parody account?@NBCDelayed?was launched on Sunday.

"Tune in tonight for the Olympic Opening Ceremonies in Beijing," one tweet read.

Despite the criticism, the tape-delay appears to be working. NBC's coverage of the opening ceremonies on Sunday delivered a 23.0 overnight rating?the best ever for an Olympics held outside the United States.

Markets stay supported by ECB hopes

LONDON (AP) ? Hopes that Europe is preparing to take new action to fight its debt crisis supported markets on Monday at the start of a week that could also see the Federal Reserve enact new measures to boost the U.S. economy.

Stocks, as well as the euro and the bond prices of Spain and Italy, have been buoyant since European Central Bank president Mario Draghi said last Thursday that the bank "is ready to do what it takes to preserve the euro. Believe me, it will be enough."

Those comments raised expectations that, at the very least, the ECB will ramp up its bond-buying program in the hope of keeping a lid on Spanish and Italian borrowing rates. The recent sharp rise in Spain's interest rates raised concerns that the 17-country eurozone hasn't the capacity to bail out its fourth-largest economy, and raised the specter of Italy needing financial help, too.

"There is no doubt that policy action is required given the escalation in the crisis and we think it unlikely that Draghi would endanger his reputation and credibility by not fulfilling expectations," said Neil MacKinnon, chief global strategist at VTB Capital.

In Europe, Germany's DAX rose 0.8 percent to 6,743 while the CAC-40 in France was 0.6 percent higher at 3,299. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.9 percent at 5,677.

U.S. stocks were also underperforming their European counterparts ? the Dow Jones industrial average was flat at 13,076 while the broader S&P 500 index fell 0.1 percent to 1,385.

Most of the attention Monday will continue to center on Europe, with U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner meeting Draghi and Germany's finance minister to discuss the challenges facing Europe and the global economy.

Making sure that Spain and Italy can continue tapping financial markets for cash appears to be the priority of policymakers despite a warning from Germany's central bank, the Bundesbank, that the line between monetary and fiscal policy should not be blurred.

Both Spain and Italy have seen their borrowing rates in bond markets ease since Draghi's comments.

The yield on Spain's 10-year bonds in the markets has dropped significantly below the dangerous 7 percent level to around 6.60 percent, while Italy was able to raise a bigger than expected ?5.5 billion ($6.77 billion) in a round of auctions Monday. Crucially, the yield on the 10-year bond fell to 5.96 percent from 6.19 percent the last time it was offered, a signal of improving investor appetite.

The spotlight this week won't just be on Europe: Fed policymakers are also meeting this week and there are growing expectations that in light of waning economic growth, they may announce a new monetary stimulus. The Bank of England also holds its monthly rate-setting meeting.

"With the rally we have had, the potential is for the central bankers to disappoint," said Louise Cooper, markets analyst at BGC Partners. "This Draghi-inspired rally may peter out if the central bankers fail to deliver."

The euro was down 0.5 percent to $1.2252 after figures from the European Union showed economic confidence in the eurozone fell to a 34-month low in July. News that the Spanish economy contracted a further 0.4 percent in the second quarter of the year, its third straight quarterly decline, also weighed it down.

Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 stock average closed up 0.8 percent at 8,635.44 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng jumped 1.6 percent to 19,585.40. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 climbed 0.9 percent to 4,245.70 and South Korea's Kospi rose 0.8 percent to 1,843.79. China's Shanghai Composite fell 0.9 percent to 2,109.91.

In energy trading, benchmark crude for September delivery was down 30 cents at $89.83 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Money Management Tips To Keep Your Personal Finances In Order

Money issues are one of the most common causes of stress and depression. Use the following advice to resolve your debts and improve your life.

If you are in collections, then your debt will someday be written off, even if you don?t pay. There are consequences to this, however, and you need to be sure you are ready to face them. Ask a financial expert to find out when the debt you owe will elapse and do not make a payment to a collection agenct if they are working to collect an old debt.

Save cash by cutting your family?s hair yourself. Even though a hair stylist may do a great job, you will spend more money. It is free to cut your own hair!

If you are thinking about getting a car or home, it is crucial to have a good credit score. Think about taking out a small loan, paying it off quickly, or keep a low balance and make timely payments on a couple of credit cards. You need to pay your card as a whole on all of your bills.

Re-evaluate your insurance policies. Many people unwittingly pay too much for their insurance. Another company may give you a cheaper rate for the same service. In addition, some insurance options aren?t necessary for people in certain stages of life. If this is the case, get rid of these items or search for different insurance.

Do not rely on credit cards for purchases. Furthermore, find ways to pay off your loans that are charging you interest on a monthly basis. Flushing your money down the toilet is the equivalent of paying interest on loans. It is critical that you remove all interest from your personal finances.

It?s never too late to take charge of your personal finances. By taking this step, you will still be in better financial shape at 65 years old than you would have been had you never started. Jumping in, whereever you are, and getting your finances managed is important, and any little step counts.

If you have kids and want them to go to college, be sure to start saving right when they?re born. College costs a lot of money and if you wait for too long to save, you may find that you don?t have enough to put them through it.

Buying a car is definitely one of the biggest and most important purchases you will ever make. To get the best deal on a car, it?s smart to check with all the auto dealers in your local area. Do not overlook the Internet as another shopping option to find low prices on cars.

Today is a volatile time; it?s wise to diversify your investments. Put some in a pure savings account, more in a checking space, invest some in equities, and then put more into higher-interest arenas and even gold. Use these ideas to make sure your money is safe.

If you are living paycheck to paycheck, you should look into overdraft protection. Although you may have to pay a little extra each month, the fee for overdrafting could be as much as $20.

If you want your personal finances to be healthy, you should limit your access to credit. If the credit card companies give you more credit than you really should have, your credit score will go down, and you will have to pay higher interest over time.

Read any mail that your credit card company sends you. Current law requires credit issuers to give you at least 45 days notice of any changes. Read the new terms of agreement and changes the company is going to make. This will help you decide if you wish to continue being their customer. If you decide it is not worth maintaining, close the account, and move on.

Do not take on any debt and pay off what you have. This can be done, though people often need to try different strategies before they find one that works for them. Pay your outstanding debt down bit by bit, and don?t be tempted to get into new debt! In time with a solid approach, you will have less financial stress.

By working on your finances, you will have a good picture of where you stand financially. Having your finances in order will help reduce the amount of stress you are feeling and will allow you to pay attention to other aspects of your life which may be getting neglected.

Simple Strategies On How To Spend Wisely

When you go into business for yourself, you need to have outstanding personal finance skills. This is certainly true if you begin freelancing. As a freelancer, you will likely be wholly responsible for your taxes and social security contributions. Research these obligations at the beginning of your freelancing career. Do not put it off until tax time rolls around! If you can help it, never use your credit card to obtain a cash advance. Most credit card companies charge exorbitant interest rates on cash advances, and the interest will begin to accrue immediately. This service should be used only in the most dire financial emergency, in order to avoid greater problems. What are you spending on your kids? It is easy to put too much money from the budget in this department, especially when times are good. While your kids need many things, you should not be providing all of their wants, especially, if it is not in the budget. This will make it easier to save for their college education and to help them when they get older, with anything they might need. While it?s always tempting to help out a friend or family member, you should be very careful about co-signing a loan. Microsoft intros Wedge Mobile Keyboard, whose case doubles as a stand

Image

As we've seen, there will be no shortage of tablet / keyboard hybrids on offer when Windows 8 starts shipping this fall. But since those keyboard docks will typically be sold separately, that means you're also about to see loads of third-party alternatives. Not to be left out, Microsoft just announced a Bluetooth mobile keyboard, along with its smallest-ever mouse -- both of which can be used with any Windows tablet.

Starting with that Wedge Mobile Keyboard, it resembles Zaggmate's iPad case from 2010, in that it has a hard case to make it more travel-resilient. Here, though, the casing is made of flexible rubber, allowing it to double as a tablet stand. Putting it over the keys also turns the keyboard off, allowing you to conserve battery life. On board, you'll also find hotkeys specific to certain Windows 8 features, such as the Charms Bar. And, as the name suggests, the keyboard rises a bit in the back, thanks to the battery door on the other side (this takes two AAA cells, by the way.) One caveat: though you can use it with Windows 7, 8 and RT, and even Mac OS X, but it's not compatible with Vista. Sorry, folks.

In a similar vein, the tiny Wedge Touch Mouse has a matching soft-touch surface and is also Bluetooth-enabled. Like other mice in Microsoft's lineup, it has BlueTrack technology, allowing it to be used on a wide variety of surfaces. The mouse, which runs on a single AA battery, also shuts down whenever you power down whatever device it's paired with. These products will ship "soon," according to Microsoft, with the keyboard retailing for $79.95 and the mouse going for $69.95. For now, we've got a bunch of photos below for your viewing pleasure.

2. Find a niche and stick to it.

3. Think outside the box.

You can use the many known marketing strategies to build your business. However, innovative business owners will gain more clients and profits by thinking outside the box. Get creative and come up with your own unique ways to market your product or services.

The Benefits of List of Real Estate Agents | Dolphin Art Gallery

In the event your organization provides real estate business card making services, you should start advertising them properly. The simplest way to ensure an effective campaign is giving e-mails to all those people who are fascinated with the service which your workers are liable to provide. This method is known as targeted e-mail marketing. On your case, you have to begin sending e-mails to a list of realtors as they?re practically the sole ones who will be interested in buying from your company a real estate business card. Nevertheless, your organization might not be specialized in making business cards. Do not worry if this is your situation. Utilizing a list of real estate agents you could advertise any products relevant to this field beginning from desk plates that state the name of the agent and finishing along with brochures, pens, mortgage calculators or key tags. Each real estate agent requires a pen and a wisely produced brochure that includes a list of prices and his past sales. You may even advertise services which help agents generate a wonderful portfolio or resume.

List Of Real Estate AgentsIt is important for any person to find the list of real estate agents of their own country so they can find a person to sell their own property. Those who work with this sort of business are known as realtor. Individuals always work on the part of you to help you to sell your property. Actually they do the job in order to make the task easy and simple. They make an association with a property purchaser. They will make all of the essential things such as law of agency, issues of your property paper and many others. They will provide you with a great buyer for your property so you can sell your property very easily without dealing with any problem. Real estate realtors will perform everything to provide you with a perfect buyer. Because of this, you?ll need the list of realtors of your city if you?ll sell your property. If you?ve got the list, you won?t face any trouble to have contract with the very best real estate agent for selling your own property.

Companies that sell real estate signs have now the chance to advertise their products by simply beginning an advertising campaign with a bought email list of realtors. It doesn?t actually matter if your signs say ?For Sale? or ?Sold?. Each real estate agent needs one of these to use on the process of attempting to sell a house. They don?t get paid unless the property is sold. Therefore, the house needs to be promoted well. Here is where you can help. Your products will allow them to make the house look completely different from all the other ones which are on the alley. However, they?ll never ever get your products once you do not promote them effectively sending emails to a list of real estate agents. In other words, your sales won?t grow if you don?t pay close attention to how you advertise your real estate signs. In case you considered that you?d be needed to spend lots of cash on this list, remove that belief now as it?s certainly not correct. Firms who sell e-mail lists offer to every single organization the chance to get an efficient advertising campaign with really small investments.

When you wish to sell your home or other property, real estate agent could be the most faithful source. Only real estate agents can offer you the most recent information and news concerning the prices of the property with financing as well as other conditions. The real estate agents used to buying the property from you and sell them to some other real estate agents or even the public. You will get 100 % proof housing information coming from the real estate agents. For that reason, gathering the list of real estate agents can play a vital role on your task of selling any specific property. It will likely be the best offer so you can collect and update your list of realtors if you want to sell your house or any property safely. Those are the only individuals with whom you could trust for selling your home or property.

Australia defends defence cuts

Australian Defence Minister Stephen Smith defended military spending cuts, saying the belt-tightening would not impact overseas operations or those with key ally the United States.

Canberra announced in May that it would slash Aus$5.5 billion (US$5.76 billion) from its defence budget as part of sweeping government cuts, deferring or scrapping jet and weapons deliveries and sacking 1,000 staff.

Smith said he had spoken with US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on three occasions about the cuts, which do not involve cutting military personnel numbers or overseas operations, most recently last week.

"And he is absolutely convinced, as I am, that the cuts that we have made in our defence programme continue to protect our long-term capability but most importantly don't have any adverse consequences for our overseas operations," he told ABC TV on Sunday.

"And don't have any adverse implications for what we are doing with the United States, our enhanced practical cooperation, whether that's (US) marines in Darwin or the prospect of enhanced aviation access to our airbases in the Northern Territory."

Australia has some 1,500 troops serving in Afghanistan as well as peacekeeping deployments in East Timor and the Solomon Islands, and is set to became a critical regional ally of the United States in the Asia-Pacific.

Some 2,500 US Marines are to be stationed in northern Australia by 2016-17 under a military deal signed with US President Barack Obama last year.

"We both share a view, which is we would both like to be spending more as far as defence is concerned, but we are both facing these economic and fiscal constraints," Smith said of his talks with Panetta.

Smith rejected the idea that Australia was "taking a free ride" on Washington when it came to defence, saying the nation continued to be in the top 13 or 14 military spenders.

"In Afghanistan for example we are the 10th largest contributor, we are the largest non-NATO contributor and we are the third-largest special forces contributor," he said.

"And we're also the country in our part of the world most active in enhancing our practical cooperation with the United States as the United States rebalances into the Pacific."

Smith said as Australian forces were drawn down in Afghanistan, and with the prospect of troops leaving the Solomon Islands and East Timor, the defence ministry would review developments in a white paper to be delivered next year.

Healthy Fare to your Wedding Reception | articlereference.net

Whether your wedding reception is getting held at a ritzy hotel or a neighborhood park, there?s no reason why you can?t serve healthy foods that will nourish and satisfy your guests. If you?re planning to begin a new life as being a married couple using a healthy mind/body/spirit perspective, why not begin on your wedding day?

Traditional wedding fare in venues like hotels and restaurants commonly includes boring chicken dishes with overcooked vegetables, a barely-identifiable starch merchandise and also a lot of sugar. Mass-produced meals is par to your course when you work with institutional kitchens, but using a little creative considering (and a willingness to spend more on your food budget), you can create a beautiful, healthy repast to your wedding feast.

Some of one?s menu selections will vary depending on a time of day your wedding takes place. It?s is more affordable ? and correct ? to serve lighter, healthier foods for your morning or afternoon wedding in which a lavish meal isn?t expected. For lunch, start having a large salad that contains different vegetables (the a lot more live, green stuff on a plate, the healthier the meal will be), and in case you must include bread, pick a thing with whole grains rather than lifeless white rolls. To your primary course, pick a vegetable-heavy pasta dish, a skinless chicken breast or a salmon filet (this works for dinner too). Of course there is going to be wedding cake following the meal, so take into account serving smaller slices of cake accompanied by some fresh fruit.

In terms of beverages, it?s effortless (and significantly cheaper) to serve iced tea and bottled water rather than sodas and sugary juices. Naturally, individuals will expect alcohol, but you?ll be able to save lots of money but providing only beer and wine rather than an open bar.

You will discover that hotels, restaurants and caterers will usually be content to customize their menus for you, so don?t be afraid to request exactly what you want. Even if your guests occur away grumbling about having to consume ?health food? when they expected rubber chicken and sugary snacks, you?ll have produced a strong statement in front of close friends and loved ones about the way of life you embrace.

UCLA researchers have come across an unexpected potential use for fluoxetine commonly known as Prozac which shows promise as an antiviral agent. The discovery could provide another tool in treating human enteroviruses that sicken and kill people in the U.S. and around the world.

Human enteroviruses are members of a genus containing more than 100 distinct RNA viruses responsible for various life threatening infections, such as poliomyelitis and encephalitis. While immunization has all but eliminated the poliovirus, the archetype for the genus, no antiviral drugs currently exist for the treatment of enterovirus infections, which are often severe and potentially fatal. In view of its favorable pharmacokinetics and safety profile of fluoxetine which is in a class of compounds typically used in the treatment of depression, anxiety disorders and some personality disorders the research team found that it warrants additional study as a potential antiviral agent for enterovirus infections.

Using molecular screening, the UCLA research team from the Department of Pediatrics, the California NanoSystems Institute and the Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology found that fluoxetine was a potent inhibitor of coxsackievirus replication. This is one of the viruses that include polio and echovirus that is found in the gastrointestinal tract. Exposure to the virus causes other opportunistic infections and diseases.

"The discovery of unexpected antiviral activity of fluoxetine is scientifically very significant and draws our attention to previously overlooked potential targets of fluoxetine and other psychogenic drugs," said Robert Damoiseaux, scientific director of the Molecular Screening Shared Resource at the California NanoSystems Institute. "Part of our follow-up work will be the discovery of these unconventional targets for fluoxetine and other drugs of the same class and how these targets intersect with the known targets of this drug class."

Paul Krogstad, professor of pediatrics and molecular and medical pharmacology, added that understanding the mechanisms of action of fluoxetine and norfloxetine against coxsackieviruses "will add to our understanding of enterovirus replication and lead to assessment of their potential clinical utility for the future treatment of serious enterovirus infections."

The research team found that fluoxetine did not interfere with either viral entry or translation of the viral genome. Instead, fluoxetine and norfluoxetine markedly reduced the production of viral RNA and protein.

###

The study was published on July 2 in the journal of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy. Study authors also include Jun Zuo, Kevin K. Quinn, Steve Kye, and Paige Cooper from the Department of Pediatrics. The study was supported by grants from the Today's and Tomorrow's Children's Fund and the UCLA Department of Pediatrics Nanopediatrics Program.

The California NanoSystems Institute is an integrated research facility located at UCLA and UC Santa Barbara. Its mission is to foster interdisciplinary collaborations in nanoscience and nanotechnology; to train a new generation of scientists, educators and technology leaders; to generate partnerships with industry; and to contribute to the economic development and the social well-being of California, the United States and the world. The CNSI was established in 2000 with $100 million from the state of California. The total amount of research funding in nanoscience and nanotechnology awarded to CNSI members has risen to over $900 million. UCLA CNSI members are drawn from UCLA's College of Letters and Science, the David Geffen School of Medicine, the School of Dentistry, the School of Public Health and the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. They are engaged in measuring, modifying and manipulating atoms and molecules the building blocks of our world. Their work is carried out in an integrated laboratory environment. This dynamic research setting has enhanced understanding of phenomena at the nanoscale and promises to produce important discoveries in health, energy, the environment and information technology.?

What Music Will You Listen to? Midyear Album/Mini-Album Review ...

2012 has been a prolific year for K-pop ? and we?re only halfway through. Here are our picks for the top three albums or mini-albums from the first half of 2012.

Dana:

My personal pick for best mini-album would be (and I?m sure this will surprise approximately no one) SNSD TaeTiSeo?s?Twinkle. ?Now, now ? before you all jump down my throat and accuse me of being an abhorrent SONE who blindly adores every single product that her beloved nine angels produce, give me a chance to explain myself. ?I actually have actively punished SNSD in the past (I?m sure it was very effective) for producing sloppy work; I refused to purchase the entire? The Boys album, since I felt that more than half of the tracks were uninspired, bland, and evocative of an image that, in my humble opinion, the now-20-something-year-old SNSD doesn?t well embody. ?Additionally, I was frustrated with the total lack of stylistic or musical progression that the album demonstrated. ?Though their Japanese releases inspired in me a flicker of hope that not all was lost, I wasn?t prepared to support SNSD with my hard-earned dollar bills unless I felt that it was worth it to have their music on my iPod.

Though I wasn?t terribly enthused when I first heard that SNSD would be sub-grouping,?TaeTiSeo (and by that same token,?Twinkle) turned out to be exactly what I thought the group needed: a fresh sound, a new style, solid songs, and equally solid vocals. ?Though I really do appreciate the attempts at equitable vocal distribution between all nine members, sometimes the live performances of songs that I really love make me cringe with how truly terrible some of them sound without MR. ?Twinkle, however, presented an opportunity for three of the more vocally talented members to shine ? and shine they did. ?Even in live performances, all of the girls were largely on point ? and given that they each received more than their fair share of challenging lines, it was really apparent that all of them have improved tremendously since debut.

But even more so than the vocals,?Twinkle?tops my list because the songs are (again, in my humble opinion) awesome. ?I completely appreciated the dramatic stylistic transformation that the girls underwent, and really, it was about time that there was some actual singing and instrumentation in something produced by SNSD. ?That the album experiments with a number of different musical genres, from jazz to funk, also won it some points. ?While I originally thought that some of the tracks might be throwaways (?Library? and ?Goodbye, Hello? come to mind), they actually began to grow on me after a few listens. ?It?s incredibly rare that I find an album that doesn?t make me want to hit the ?skip? button over and over to get to the one or two songs that I like (and okay, I do realize that this is a mini-album and therefore has fewer songs), but?Twinkle really just hit the spot for me.

As far as mini-albums go, I was also surprised to find that I really enjoyed?Big Bang?s?Alive, as I was never previously much of a fan of their work. ?No particular reason for that, I expect, beyond the fact that my interest in K-pop pretty much coincided with their two-year hiatus. ?However, ?Blue? had me at first listen, and it was enough to inspire me to check out the rest of the tracks ? all of which, I?m pleased to say, are pretty fabulous. ?I think I have yet to meet a single person who doesn?t on some level like to jam to ?Fantastic Baby? ? believe me, I work with cranky old people all day long, and one sure-fire way to get them to stop complaining is to blast ?Fantastic Baby? and start dancing along. ?Gets ?em every time.

My favorite album by far has been Lena Park?s Parallax. ?I?ve always really appreciated it when artists invest themselves directly in the production of their music, and so I was prepared to love?Parallax?? and it really is one of the best releases that I?ve heard in awhile. ?The combination of Lena Park?s soulful lyrics (penned herself) alongside simply stunning instrumentation won me over, and hopefully it won you over, too.

Patricia:

If there?s one big, Kpop-related revelation I?ve had within the past six months, it?d have to be my view on the album format and its dying relevance in K-pop. With recent full-length K-pop albums being highlighted not for the quality of their content but for the amount of unnecessary filler tracks on each album, there?s reason to begin casting doubts on the integrity of the full-length album format within a fast-paced K-pop scene.

The rising popularity of the mini-album has been met with mixed reviews; many have said that mini-albums containing six to eight tracks each are ultimately nothing more than a giant waste of money. Indeed, there?s something a little bit disconcerting about dropping $18 for, essentially, half an album. But it?s important to note that K-pop is, inherently, not an album-centric industry. Rather, K-pop places a significantly heavier emphasis on singles.

It goes without saying that K-pop is not as much a music industry as it is an entertainment industry, and a single is far more likely to penetrate all aspects of the K-pop entertainment scene than a comparatively clunky full-length album. A single opens up opportunities for weekly live performances, product endorsements, variety show gags, and even viral memedom. When one single song is capable of being that lucrative, why should music producers even bother to create 10 more songs just so they can accompany a lead single guaranteed to be far more lucrative than all of those 10 songs combined? The popularity of lead singles in K-pop make full-length albums look unnecessary and cumbersome. In a way, the full-length album has become a mere formality within K-pop, and with the way things are going, I?d venture to say that K-pop ought to do away with the full-length album format altogether and focus on releasing singles or mini-albums.

But even saying that makes me a little sad; after all, what?s a music scene without albums to hold it up? Calling a mini-album a ?mini-jib? just doesn?t have the same ring to it, and ultimately, it?d be a lot more difficult for K-pop to align itself with the rest of the pop music world if they don?t follow the same common format that every other pop artist on the planet ascribes to. That?s why my heart does a little leap whenever I come across a full-length album that?s ?good to the core? ? consistent, interesting, creative, and void of filler tracks. The first half of 2012 has heralded a surprisingly large amount of quality music, and much of this music comes in the form of mini-albums. Mini-album releases by Big Bang, 2AM, Wonder Girls, Se7en, B.A.P., EXO, and TTS have all made it to the top of my list. Of course, the material on these mini-albums ought to be commended ? good music is good music, after all ? but in this day and age where finding a quality full-length album is proving to be more and more elusive, I think well-constructed full-length albums deserve some kudos.

Busker Busker ? Busker Busker: The First Album.

Having debuted just this year, Busker Busker?s domination of the music charts is nothing less than astonishing. They?ve gained significant interest amongst Korean audiences. Unfortunately, it doesn?t seem as if Busker Busker?s popularity has translated over to the international fan community, if only because the definition of ?K-pop? amongst international audiences seems to rest firmly within the bounds of idoldom.

Nevertheless, Busker Busker?s first album is impressive. It seems to me that the K-indie scene has become established to the point where there is a stereotypical ?sound? that defines K-indie music, and Busker Busker?s sound definitely falls within that preestablished fold. That said, I think that different people take a liking to different indie groups based on specific quirks that each group has. The reason that Busker Busker holds such a great appeal to me is that it?s a living example proving that indie music doesn?t have to have ugly vocals. Jang Bum-joon has a really soothing voice that matches perfectly with Busker Busker?s musical style, making for an overall comfortable listen.

As an album, Busker Busker is particularly strong because there?s not a single track that cuts any corners or shows any sign of being a filler track. The fact that Busker Busker boasts 11 equally strong songs in a row makes the album strong simply by default.

Jay Park ? New Breed.

New Breed was an unexpected favorite. Prior to this album, Jay Park had never struck me as being a particularly strong soloist. Obviously, he had the skills and the potential to be successful in many ways ? as a singer, a dancer, an all-around entertainer ? but none of his post-2PM work really showcased that.

New Breed was Jay Park?s first real chance to shine, and while it can be said that Jay Park?s style isn?t as universally appealing as that of most other K-pop idols, it?s good to see that he?s staying true to himself despite the pressures of conforming to the typical K-pop idol ideal. Even the album?s lead track, ?Know Your Name,? while still ringing strongly of a K-pop friendly beat, still aligns closely with Jay Park?s musical style and meshes well with the rest of the album.

Admittedly, New Breed isn?t exactly an intellectual listen ? a bit of an unfair expectation considering the abundance of Korean hip-hop artists known for inserting social commentary in their rhymes. In addition, I?m not a huge fan of Jay?s attempts at being ?hard.? If you?re looking for humility, New Breed isn?t it. But perhaps Jay?s occasional self-important ?swag? is merited. New Breed does a fantastic job of showing off everything Jay can do ? which is a lot ? and every one of the album?s 18 (18!) tracks have their own distinct character and are all worth listening to.

B1A4 ? Ignition.

I tend to be a bit cynical (or a lot cynical) when it comes to music by idol rookie groups, and this largely has to do with the way that the K-pop scene is currently changing to place a greater emphasis on ?entertainment? than music. At first glance, B1A4 seemed like just another member of the pack. They?d already done their own?Sesame Player stint, their music was pretty fluffy, and even though they boasted nearly-perfect live vocals, it certainly didn?t help the fact that none of the B1A4 boys looked like they could dance.

But to view a group like B1A4 in such a fragmented manner isn?t fair, and it wasn?t until?Ignition that B1A4 was really able to musically shine. While the tracks on?Ignition are all pretty typical as far as K-pop music goes, the album on the whole shows clear effort. Each track is as strong as the next, and the fact that leader Jinyoung wholly composed the lead single,??Baby I?m Sorry,? certainly gains points in my book.

The only criticism I have of B1A4?s music at the moment is that while they haven?t released a bad song to date, their repertoire doesn?t show much diversity. Though B1A4 has only been around for less than two years, it?s hard to look at them and not see the untapped potential. A solid first full-length album is a promising sign, but here?s hoping that B1A4 will not be pigeonholed into a fixed style for future releases.

Could Gene Doping Be Part of Future Olympics?

THURSDAY, July 26 (HealthDay News) -- Despite all the training, sweat, dedication and sacrifice that goes into becoming an Olympic competitor, these elite athletes also tend to have an advantage that average sports lovers lack: superior DNA. Just like eye color or a keen intellect, a constellation of the "right" genes can grace certain athletes with world-class speed, strength and endurance.

But with the advent of gene therapy -- technology on the cusp of helping treat grave illnesses -- are the days of "natural selection" of super-athletes coming to an end?

Genetics and athletics experts fear that the 2012 Olympic Games, opening Friday in London, may be the last without competitors secretly hinging their gold medal hopes on "gene doping" -- modifying their DNA to make themselves bigger, stronger or faster -- and that such gene manipulation may one day match the use of illicit performance-enhancing substances.

"Gene doping has been sort of smoldering as a theoretical possibility for at least two or three sets of Olympic Games," said Dr. Ted Friedmann, chair of the genetics panel of the World Anti-Doping Agency. "If you ask me how many more years it'll be before it's done, well, I'd say a very long time. But how many more years before some idiot does something stupid? That could be tomorrow," he added.

"The technology is ripe for abuse by badly trained people," explained Friedmann, also director of the Center for Molecular Genetics at the University of California, San Diego. "The chance of effectiveness if done by current methods is almost nil."

According to an article published July 19 in the journal Nature, more than 200 gene variants have been associated with athletic prowess, including a variant of the ACE gene linked to endurance and an alternative copy of the ACTN3 gene -- dubbed the "speed gene" and found in nearly every male Olympic sprinter ever tested.

While therapeutic gene therapy -- injecting foreign DNA into muscle or bone to change a person's genetic makeup, creating proteins that infiltrate tissue or blood -- still carries too many side effects be widely used, cases already exist of doping where the protein (rather than the gene that encodes it) is taken to improve performance, said Dr. Kathryn North, an Australian researcher whose 2010 study on the ACTN3 gene helped establish its link to sprinters and power athletes.

Examples include the manipulation of the EPO gene, which increases hemoglobin levels, boosting blood's oxygen-carrying capabilities, she said. Finnish athlete Eero Mantyranta, the winner of seven Olympic cross-country skiing medals, naturally carries such a mutation, elevating his oxygen-carrying capacity by 25 percent to 50 percent, according to the Nature article.

Tests to root out gene-doping are still being developed and aren't ready for prime time, but apparently these rogue proteins can already be detected.

"Gene-doping is not yet a reality, but the technology to detect doping will evolve along with the techniques to misuse the new genetic technologies," said North, head of the Institute for Neuroscience and Muscle Research at the Children's Hospital at Westmead in Australia.

Indeed, an air of inevitability about gene-doping permeates, though Olympics officials will concentrate for the moment on the 4,500 tests already available for banned substances in their efforts to keep the 2012 Games clean.

Robert Kersey, director of the Athletic Training Education Program at California State University in Fullerton, predicted that the pressure to win -- twinned with monetary pressure from corporate sponsors -- will combine to make gene-doping irresistible to some world-class athletes.

"Humans are greedy and if there's money to be made, people are willing to take those risks," said Kersey, also a professor of kinesiology. "Everyone involved has the potential to make money or fame or fortune out of it . . . you're never going to convince every person who wants to win a gold medal that they shouldn't bend the rules if they feel they have a real chance of winning."

But North and Friedmann pointed out that merely having a favorable gene -- whether for athleticism or any other trait -- doesn't guarantee that gene will express itself in the desired way. A specific combination of many gene variants, in addition to training, environment and attitude, "really make up the complex phenotype that is the elite athlete," North said.

Added Friedmann: "Genes work in an enormously complicated set of interactions, and no gene works by itself. If you have the gene for speed or endurance, all the other genes you carry that [help] or work against that will affect how that gene expresses itself."

Fraudster tries to sell missing oil exec's $1M home

Metropolitan Police

Metropolitan Police have been investigating the disappearance of Carole Waugh.

By Daniel Strieff, NBC News

LONDON -- British police fear a former oil executive has been abducted by a gang of fraudsters who have tried to sell her $1 million London apartment and may have forced her to hand over her bank codes, according to reports Thursday.

Detectives searching for Carole Waugh, 50, said that an unidentified man impersonating her brother had met people in her apartment in central London's upmarket Marylebone neighborhood in an apparent attempt to sell the property, The Times?reported?(site operates behind a paywall).

Detective Chief Inspector John McFarlane also?told Britain's Press Association that "very substantial amounts of money" had been stolen from Waugh's bank accounts.

Waugh, who has previously worked in the oil industry in London and Libya, has not been seen by family or friends since April, when they discussed a planned 50th?birthday party for her in June. The case has been passed to the London Metropolitan Police's homicide and serious crimes division.

'Completely out of character'
McFarlane told the PA that financial activity linked to her identity has also grown "incrementally more suspicious." Police have?released images of a man outside a supermarket in north London on July 10, where one of Waugh's ATM cards was used, the PA reported.

"Ms. Waugh is a successful businesswoman and her disappearance is completely out of character," McFarlane said, according to the London Evening Standard.

"Following her disappearance, there have been a number of fraudulent transactions associated with Ms. Waugh's bank account. ... There are also a number of her personal possessions that cannot currently be located," the newspaper quoted him as saying.

Police officers told The Times that Waugh had been impersonated by at least three women at financial institutions across London. Earlier this week, two women, aged 48 and 50, were arrested on charges of conspiracy to defraud in connection with the case. The 48-year-old has been freed on bail, the newspaper said.

Three men and two other women have been arrested and bailed in connection with the case, reports said. A fourth man, named as 40-year-old Rakesh Bhayani, appeared in a London court via video link on Wednesday, The Times said.

Waugh's family, who are based in the north of England, said they did not know much about Carole Waugh?s life in London. She was able to work sporadically since moving to London in 2008 because she had been "very careful" with her money, her brother Chris, 53, told the PA.

Online dating link?
Waugh is single and police have been trying to trace men she may have met through dating sites, The Times said.

Chris Waugh told reporters that his sister had been planning a vacation in Las Vegas with her female friends. He appealed for his sister's friends, as well as any recent work colleagues, to come forward.

"We are keen to track them down to see what was going on," the PA quoted him as saying.?"If we could find the friends, just to see what light they can shine on [my] sister."

Chris Waugh said it was a "very distressing moment" when he heard someone was posing as him in a fraudulent attempt to sell his sister's apartment, according to the PA.

'Our imaginations have been running wild'
He said his family was "very proud" of his younger sister, who he described as "very focused, strong and driven," The London Evening Standard reported.

"The last time we saw Carole was at Easter when we all got together in (the northern English city of) Durham. We had a great time and we were all very excited about Carole's 50th birthday party in June. We were planning how we would celebrate and I was looking forward to making a fuss of her, as she did for my birthday," the newspaper quoted him as saying.

Full international news coverage on NBCNews.com

"There was nothing to suggest she would go missing. It was all very strange and completely out of character because my sister rings my mother every other day and suddenly, within days of getting together at Easter, the phone calls just stopped," the Evening Standard quoted Waugh as saying.

Members of her family told The Guardian newspaper that it was highly unusual for Carole Waugh not to check in regularly by telephone.

"Our imaginations have been running wild. I've considered several options, she could have gone on a quick holiday but that became less likely as the time went, and because she would still have telephoned mother," Chris Waugh told The Guardian.

EAST LANSING, Mich. The secret to the deadly 2011 E. coli outbreak in Germany has been decoded, thanks to research conducted at Michigan State University.

The deadliest E. coli outbreak ever, which caused 54 deaths and sickened more than 3,800 people, was traced to a particularly virulent strain that researchers had never seen in an outbreak before. In the current issue of the academic journal PLoS ONE, a team of researchers led by Shannon Manning, MSU molecular biologist and epidemiologist, suggests a way to potentially tame the killer bacteria.

The strain, E. coli O104:H4, shares some characteristics as other deadly E. coli bacteria, but its combination is novel. Researchers haven't determined the mechanism it uses to cause disease, although Manning and her team were able to find the strain's Achilles heel its biofilm.

By focusing on the bacteria's biofilm, the grouping of many E. coli bacteria that stick to a cell's surface and grow encased in a self-produced protective coat, Manning and colleagues were able to determine why it was so deadly. When the bacterium found in Germany forms a biofilm, it begins to make more toxic genes like the Shiga toxin.

Increased production of the Shiga toxin is the probable culprit that contributed to so many incidents of kidney damage and death during the 2011 outbreak, Manning said.

"What made the German outbreak so different is that many victims suffering from kidney failure were adults," she said. "Rather than attacking adults, other types of E. coli that produce Shiga toxins typically damage kidneys of children under 10."

In addition, the incubation period was considerably longer among individuals infected with the German outbreak strain compared to individuals infected with E. coli O157, a similar bacterium that can also cause illness and death. Manning believes this is because the German strain needs a longer period of time to form a biofilm, whereas biofilms are not important for O157 infections.

"Our research demonstrates that biofilm formation is critical for toxin production and kidney damage," she said. "If we can block the bacteria from forming a stable biofilm, then it is likely that we can prevent future E. coli O104:H4 infections."

The next phase of Manning's research is already focusing on creating mutant strains in an effort to prevent the bacterium from forming a biofilm. This would prevent the disease completely since the conditions would not be favorable for bacterial growth.

###

Chris Waters, MSU assistant professor of microbiology and molecular genetics, and scientists from the University of Michigan and the Michigan Department of Community Health contributed to the research.

Manning's research was funded in part by the National Institutes of Health (U19AI090872), the U.S. Department of Agriculture and MSU AgBioResearch.

Michigan State University has been working to advance the common good in uncommon ways for more than 150 years. One of the top research universities in the world, MSU focuses its vast resources on creating solutions to some of the world's most pressing challenges, while providing life-changing opportunities to a diverse and inclusive academic community through more than 200 programs of study in 17 degree-granting colleges.
