Three things that hurt US vs. Brazil

  • Where the big problem on the U.S. back line lies now

Remember when we all sat around straining our brains to fix the gaping hole along the back line, the one at left back? Timmy Chandler came along ? and then dumped us like a cheating girlfriend. No matter, though, because Fabian Johnson rode in to the timely rescue. The Hoffenheim man has little wrong over two matches, strong in one-on-one defending, reasonably well positioned, troublesome on the attack, etc.

But there?s still a bugger of a problem back there; the trouble spot just shifted into the middle.

I?ve already written the early, brutal details about Oguchi Onyewu?s night to forget. He was a little better in the second half ? until the moment when he was late stepping forward, leaving Tim Howard stranded to stop an unchallenged shot that turned into No. 4.

Carlos Bocanegra still has something to offer, but his speed will become an increasingly liability unless Jurgen Klinsmann can find a quality partner to situate alongside him, one with a little more speed. Maybe it?s Clarence Goodson. Or maybe it can be Cameron with a little more top-level experience.

Either way, the case is being built that it just isn?t Onyewu.

  • The imperfect midfield fix

The United States still has spots that are weak and vulnerable. Center back is not the only one.

The midfield mix was good enough against Scotland, but suffered severely Wednesday. Much of the trouble can be traced to Jermaine Jones, who lost too many balls, took way too long to catch the pace of the game (much faster than Saturdays) and wasn?t in the right spots, providing the requisite cover at the moments his team needed it most.

Meanwhile, Michael Bradley had another strong match. Mostly, at any rate.

More from U.S.-Brazil:?
Match report: United States 1-4 Brazil?
Bradley gets PST?s USMNT Man of the Match

There are times when Bradley didn?t move out of the center channel to pressure (or better yet, forcefully eliminate) a Brazilian advance. It underscores a point I think we?re all learning: he?s not a defensive midfielder. Not that he can?t be serviceable there, but it?s not Bradley?s ideal positioning.

Bradley has evolved into a two-way man, and a darn good one. I know the Jose Torres backers may take issue, but Bradley is the best passer on the U.S. team. His ball into Fabian Johnson to start the U.S. goal was pinpoint perfect. Looking back over his body of work in the U.S. shirt, who can deny what he offers going forward, in arranging goals and scoring them?

The three-man arrangement looked better Saturday when Edu was the holding screener and Bradley?s starting positions were higher up the field. (Wednesday, Edu and Jones played ahead of Bradley in the triangle.)

  • Too much whining, not enough ?getting on with it.?

The United States looked a little undone by the early penalty kick decision. Good call or bad, they have to get past it.

Landon Donovan was complaining too much, throwing his arms around when he needed total focus on that bunch of yellow wizards. He must have thought he was back in the L.A. Galaxy uniform; they do a lot of that stuff.

Donovan struggled to get anything going against Marcelo, among the globe?s top left backs, so some frustration may be understandable. Then again, as the most experienced U.S. man, he?s got to provide a better example.

Jones kicked into his bad old habit of lashing out temperamentally, crunching Neymar along the sideline.

Bradley has trimmed that petulant element from his game, and thankfully so. Jones, 30, may be what he is, unable to turn that stuff off at this point. It?s another reason Klinsmann would do well to keep looking for a third central midfielder.

Bottom line: this is big boy soccer, and the stakes will rise dramatically in just over a week. Things won?t always go the U.S. way, and they just have to get on with it.

'Prometheus' Featurette: Meet The Ship Behind The Myth

With the release of "Prometheus" only a week and a half away, Fox has unveiled a new featurette for the movie that focuses on the ship itself. With $1.3M In New Funding, CodeGuard Launches Its Free Website Backup, Monitoring Service

Screen shot 2012-05-29 at 6.27.47 PMAt TechCrunch Disrupt NYC last May, the unanimous winner of the "Audience Choice" award was a young, Atlanta-based startup called CodeGuard. The startup caught the audience's attention based on a simple value proposition: To become a "time machine for your website." In other words, CodeGuard's free service allows any site owner to back up their website and revert to earlier versions, while monitoring for infections. After months of tweaking and beta testing, today CodeGuard is officially pulling back the curtain on a new-and-improved service, backed by a fresh $1.3 million in funding from Imlay Investments and a host of angel investors, including Palaniswamy Rajan, Bert Ellis, Tom Noonan, Matt Chanoff, and Merrick Furst.

Former Apple Employee: ?People Are Embarrassed By Siri?

Posted by Arron on 25 May 2012 @ 6:11 PM

Arriving as perhaps a rare insight into the inner workings of the company, speaking to Fortune earlier this week, Adam Lashinsky, cited that a ?former insider? at the firm had noted to him that ? if Jobs was still around today ? the CEO would have ?lost his mind over Siri.?

- Sponsors -

According to the report, Steve would have been so shocked at how the feature functioned for the end-user, questions are now surfacing surrounding whether or not the virtual assistant itself was launched prematurely to make Apple?s iPhone 4S introduction.

CNN reports:

The ultimate ?tell? of tectonic changes at Apple will be the quality of its products. Those looking for deficiencies have found them in Siri, a less-than-perfect product that Apple released with the rare beta label in late 2011, a signal that the service shouldn?t be viewed as fully baked. Siri?s response time has been slow, meaning the servers and software powering it are inadequate. ?People are embarrassed by Siri,? says one former insider. ?Steve would have lost his mind over Siri.?

Earlier today we began a poll to determine the general felling among you, our readers, as to your satisfaction level of Siri on a personal level.

As of writing, we can reveal that 41.03% of you believe the feature is ?Flaky,? ? (although you note this was generally expected from a product still in ?Beta?) ? while 30.77% of you believe Siri does everything Apple says it does ? (and well).

Leaving 28.21% of you ?disappointed? with the feature and wanting more.

Tropical Storm Beryl makes landfall on Fla. coast

Tropical Storm Beryl has made landfall in northeastern Florida, bringing drenching rains and driving winds to the southeastern U.S. coast, forecasters said.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami reported that the center of Beryl made landfall near Jacksonville Beach at around 12:10 a.m., with near-hurricane-strength winds of 70 mph (113 kph). The hurricane center reported late Sunday that the weather system was in the process of making landfall.

"There are strong rain bands that are rotating around the center of the storm..." forecaster Al Sandrik said in an audio statement on the NHC website.

The weather system is expected to continue dumping rain over parts of Florida and Georgia on Monday. It is expected to weaken as it moves inland and become a tropical depression by Monday night, and then moves out to sea.

Tropical storm warnings were in effect for the entire Georgia coastline, as well as parts of Florida and South Carolina.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott urged Florida residents in the affected areas to "stay alert and aware."

"Tropical Storm Beryl is expected to bring heavy rain and winds, and it is vital to continue to monitor local news reports and listen to the advice of local emergency management officials," Scott said in a statement early Sunday evening.

Beryl was expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of rain to parts, with some areas getting as much as 12 inches. Forecasters predict the storm surge and tide will cause significant coastal flooding in northeastern Florida, Georgia and southern South Carolina.

The weather system could complicate holiday traffic on Monday. It wrecked some Memorial Day weekend plans on Sunday, causing shoreline campers to pack up and head inland and leading to the cancellation of some events.

Campers at Cumberland Island, Ga., which is reachable only by boat, were told to leave by 4:45 p.m. Sunday. The island has a number of undeveloped beaches and forests popular with campers.

However, many people seemed determined to make the best of the soggy forecast.

At Greyfield Inn, a 19th-century mansion and the only private inn on Cumberland Island, the rooms were nearly full Sunday and everyone was planning to stay put through the wet weather, said Dawn Drake, who answered the phone at the inn's office on the Florida coast.

In Jacksonville, Fla., Sunday's jazz festival and Memorial Day ceremony were canceled. Workers were also out clearing tree limbs and debris that could be tossed about by the storm's winds. Winds had already knocked down tree limbs and power lines in parts of coastal Georgia, leaving hundreds without electricity.

But business was booming at the Red Dog Surf Shop in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., where customers flocked to buy boards and wax in anticipation of the storm's high waves. Officials along the coast warned of rip currents, waves and high tides ? all of which can be dangerous but also tend to attract adventurous surfers. The waters had already become dangerous in South Carolina, where rescuers were searching for a missing swimmer.

The Coast Guard said three people and a dog were rescued from a sinking recreational vehicle by crews in Charleston Harbor late Sunday morning.

"There were wave heights of roughly four feet, the waves started depositing water in the boat and the boat started to get overwhelmed, it started to sink," Petty Officer Christopher Evanson, a Coast Guard spokesman, told the Associated Press. "The Coast Guard was able to get on scene, get alongside the boat and disembark the passengers.

Evanson said the Guard is "trying to convince boaters and swimmers alike to stay away from the water. It's very dangerous right now and we're trying to stay vigilant and we're out there trying to ensure that everybody is safe.

In Jacksonville Beach, Fernando Sola said business was booming at his Happy Faces Ice Cream truck. A bus- full of tourists from South Carolina had stopped to buy some ice cream and watch the storm waters churn.

"There are actually more people than on a normal day. It's working out great," said Sola, taking a few moments away from scooping ice cream to people lined up in front of his truck.

Steady, heavy winds kicked up sand across the area, forcing onlookers to shield themselves with towels.

Jessica Smith and Chester Jaheeb decided to brave the waters despite many warnings for people to stay out. Jaheeb, who was born in India but lives in Jacksonville, said he had never experienced a tropical storm before.

"We were at a certain part that started pulling us out, like the rip current, so we decided to come to shore," said Smith, 17.

Taylor Anderson, captain of Jacksonville Beach's American Red Cross Volunteer Lifesaving Corps., said his lifeguards went body-surfing early Sunday to get acclimated with the surf conditions for what looked to be a long day. They also reviewed methods to determine where there might be riptides.

"They look for discoloration, the water moving paradoxically back to sea, and our lifeguards are trained to spot that, to keep people away from that, especially when the surf is this high. It makes those run-outs very dangerous. People can get sucked into those very fast, especially with the high surf and the high wind," he said.

Though the weather was calm earlier Sunday, Anderson's lifeguards began preparing other equipment in the morning. They packed sandbags in front of the entrances to the oceanfront Red Cross lifeguard station and pulled lifeguard stands off the beach.

As the winds picked up, officials hung two red flags, one warning of dangerous ocean conditions and the other notifying beachgoers that swimming was prohibited. But a lot of people ignored the warnings. By 3:30 p.m., Anderson said, lifeguards had made 150 "preventions," meaning lifeguards ordered 150 people out of the water, though no rescues were necessary.

One of the people ordered out the water was Christian Siciliano, 14, of Jacksonville Beach. The surfer said the waves were too rough for surfing so he, his brother and a friend decided to go boogey-boarding.

"We just went out to, like, mess around," Christian said. "It was really rough. I didn't make it out too far, about 10 feet."

He said the waves were so powerful it was difficult to paddle against them. Then lifeguards raced to the area and ordered him and the two other youths from the water.

Bars and restaurants along Jacksonville Beach's oceanside roads were enjoying booming business, with outside decks crowded with people listening to music, drinking and watching the weather. At Joe's Crab Shack, which has a deck facing the Atlantic Ocean, the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive" blasted from outside speakers.

Joe Murphy, a spokesman for the Ritz Carlton in Amelia Island, Fla., said he was not seeing a flood of checkouts or people trying to get off the island. Outdoor dining had been moved inside and the hotel set up movies and family game activities, but the hotel had no plans to board up or move patio furniture inside.

The southeastern U.S. wasn't the only part of the country dealing with troublesome weather.

In Washington, the annual Memorial Day concert on the National Mall Sunday night was cut short as a line of thunderstorms approached the District of Columbia from the northwest. Mike Musher of the National Weather Service said the thunderstorms developed over Pennsylvania as part of the weather system that created record high temperatures in the Midwest over the weekend.

On Tybee Island, a barrier island not far from Savannah, water off the beaches was closed for swimming Sunday. Tybee Island fire Chief C.L. Sasser said winds of up to 42 mph were creating "horrendous water currents." Only people with flotation devices strapped or tethered to their bodies were being allowed into the water, and they were being cautioned not to venture in farther than knee deep.

"Even if you're standing in waist-deep water, the current can sweep you out quickly," he said.

His ocean rescue team pulled a total of 48 people from the water on Saturday, he said, including about 27 that were considered to be in life-threatening conditions. One man who was sucked under the water was rescued by friends and onlookers and was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

A band of showers soaked the beaches late Sunday morning, causing crowds to thin, Sasser said. With alternating rainy and sunny weather forecast throughout the day, he said he expected the crowds on the sands to ebb and flow.

In South Carolina, Janice Keith with the Myrtle Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau said Sunday that the office hadn't fielded any calls from concerned tourists.

In Beaufort County, emergency management deputy director David Zeoli said officials were continuing to monitor the storm and encourage people to have a plan in case conditions get worse.

Zeoli said winds had kicked up in the area that includes Hilton Head Island, a popular golf and beach destination. "It's just a wet day here," he said.

Microsoft To Build Windows Phone Camera Systems Specifically For Skype

by Manan

I stumbled upon a senior hardware engineer job posting by Microsoft specifically for?Windows Phone camera and Skype. The current Skype experience on Windows Phone is horrible, which is a little ironic since Microsoft bought Skype but since the acquisition happened while Windows Phone Mango was already on its way out, Microsoft cannot be blamed. However, it was clear that Microsoft has serious plans for Skype integration in Windows Phone and as the job posting I came across indicates, the company is ready to go deep into the phone?s hardware components to offer a better experience.

The senior hardware engineer with comprehensive skills in working with camera architecture like CMOS sensors and System on Chip architecture will work on developing testing scenarios and camera systems specifically to work with Skype. The key responsibility from the position description:

The Camera Chief Engineer is responsible for research, design, development, test, and qualification of camera hardware for Skype products. The ideal candidate will take leadership roles in development of very high performance compact camera products.

Duties include developing architecture for camera systems, working with a multi-disciplinary team to develop performing both lab type and production type testing and software (including image quality, electrical and mechanical testing) for camera system/module/component performance evaluation including CMOS sensor pixel, lens quality, actuator system, illumination technology and ISPs etc., performing testing/data analysis on benchmark products.

I thought toward the end of the submission he might be able to slip out but I was able to seal it up and get the win.?

-Preliminary card fighter Jacob Volkmann had the following comments: ?What is there to take away from this fight. I had my elbows out and he got me in a triangle. Not much I can say.?

Middleweight Bout: Jason Miller (185 lbs. 34-9, 1NC) vs. CB Dollaway (186 lbs. 12-5)

Dollaway recovers and gets on top of Mayhem. They get back up and Dollaway takes Mayhem down. Mayhem works back to his feet. Mayhem swings hard with his punches and tries to remain the aggressor. Dollaway rocks Mayhem with a punch and Mayhem goes down. Dollaway attacks and lands some haymaker punches as Mayhem ties to move and defend. Dollaway keeps the waist of Mayhem locked. They move back toward the fence. Dollaway keeps Mayhem on the ground and neutralizes him. Dollaway turns the position over and gets full mount. Mayhem is able to turn it over and works his way back to his feet. Dollaway before the end of the round. A strong early flurry by Mayhem, but Dollaway took back control of the round as it looks like Mayhem has gassed.

SCORECARD: 10-9, CB Dollaway. Overall CB Dollaway, 10-9.

Giant telescope to be in South Africa, Australia

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) ? Australia and South Africa will share hosting of a giant radio telescope made up of thousands of separate dishes and intended to help scientists figure out the make-up of the universe, the international consortium overseeing the project announced Friday.

South Africa led an African consortium that included Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia and Zambia, and telescopes will be erected in all its partners. In South Africa, dishes will be added to a remote site in the arid Karoo desert where a smaller radio telescope project already is under way.

South Africa and Australia, which partnered with New Zealand in bidding for the project, had competed fiercely. South Africa claimed victory Friday, saying it got two of the projects three major components.

"We may feel slightly disappointed that we didn't get the whole thing. But I think one should emphasize that we did get most of it," said Justin Jonas, the chief South African scientist on the project. "Two-thirds of the biggest instrument in the world is still the biggest instrument in the world."

South Africa's science minister Naledi Pandor and scientists who had prepared the country's bid celebrated with an Africa-shaped cake at a news conference in South Africa's capital.

"This marks a real turning point in Africa, where we are becoming a destination for science and engineering, and not just a place where there are resources and tourism opportunities," Jonas added.

Australia also welcomed the split decision.

"It is an outstanding result for the Australia-New Zealand bid after many years of preparation and an intensive international process," said Sen. Chris Evans, Australia's science minister.

The Square Kilometer Array telescope will be 50 times more sensitive and scan the sky 10,000 times faster than any existing telescope. It requires huge open spaces with very few humans.

John Womersley, chair of the consortium's board, said the telescope will help scientists answer key questions: "Where do we come from? Where are we going? What is this universe we live in?"

"We don't understand what 96 percent of our universe is made of," he said.

The organization said dividing construction of the telescope will "maximize on investments already made by both Australia and South Africa."

Womersley said that splitting construction between the two nations will likely add around 10 percent to the ?350 million ($439 million) cost of the first phase of building the giant telescope. But he said there would be a payoff for astronomers.

"It delivers more science in phase one. The capabilities of this instrument are greater than the original design," Womersley said.

Speech Topics ? How to Select One | Writing Valley

We learn speech writing at the same time when we learn academic paper writing like an essay or a literature review. Speech writing is no different than a normal academic writing except there is no plenty on making any sort of spelling or grammatical error. Most people get intimidate when they learn that they have to write a speech for their office or school presentation. The reason for their intimidation is the fear of public speaking. They don?t have confidence to speak in front of people and this hammers the effectiveness of their speech.

Nonetheless you can eliminate that intimidation and master the art of delivering a good speech if you keep practicing.

Remember that the effectiveness of your speech totally hinges on the speech topics you select. If you talk about something which you are passionate about there is a great chance that you won?t feel any intimidation or fear of public speaking. Thus, you will be able to deliver an effective speech.

Another important aspect that one should consider is researching. You need to do a research on the topic which is the subject of your speech. If you don?t have enough information on the subject matter you won?t be able to deliver the speech with confidence. Keep in mind that a good research topic is one which you really like and on which you have ample information. Below listed are some examples of good speech topics:

Obama on the defensive on spending, debt

President Barack Obama speaks to supporters during a campaign fundraiser in Denver, Wednesday, May 23, 2012. (AP Photo/Ed Andrieski)

(AP) ? Government spending and debt are emerging as a campaign tug-of-war, with Mitt Romney blaming President Barack Obama for a "prairie fire of debt" and Obama calling the charge a "cowpie of distortion." House Speaker John Boehner is talking about a debt ceiling that is still more than eight months away.

What gives? In a word, polling.

The American public is growing increasingly distressed about government spending and high budgets. The issue now ranks as high on the worry scale as lack of jobs. And it worked well for Republicans in 2010, who galvanized voters with ads and flyers that drew attention to government red ink and took back control of the U.S. House after four years of Democratic rule.

Republicans are looking for that magic again.

Romney has maintained a drumbeat of criticism over Obama's handling of federal spending and the national debt in recent weeks, forcing the president on the defensive on an issue where public opinion is stacked against him.

In Iowa earlier this month, Romney said a "prairie fire of debt" was sweeping across the nation, threatening the country's future. He accused Obama of inflating the debt that he had pledged to reduce and ballooning the federal budget deficit with the 2009 economic stimulus and 2010 health care bill after saying he would cut it sharply.

Obama, in campaign events in Colorado, California and Iowa this week, argued that federal spending had slowed to rates not seen in decades after he inherited a $1 trillion large debt and later pushed for $2 trillion in spending cuts. The president pointed to Romney's tax proposal, saying it would give millionaires tax cuts at the expense of the debt.

Obama called Romney's claims a "cowpie of distortion" and would saddle the debt with $5 trillion in new tax cuts, likening it to trying to put out "a prairie fire with some gasoline."

"What happens is, the Republicans run up the tab, and then we're sitting there and they've left the restaurant," Obama said at a campaign event in Des Moines. "And then they point and (say), 'Why did you order all those steaks and martinis?'"

Obama's defensive crouch on debt and spending reflect a hard reality: Polls consistently show voters, including sought-after independents, placing more trust in Romney to handle the massive debt. The nation's economy remains a focal point for voters but many remain concerned that years of heavy federal spending on guns and butter could leave the U.S. in a similar position as Greece and other European nations grappling with massive debt.

A Gallup/USA Today poll conducted May 10-13 found that overall, 82 percent of Americans called the "federal budget deficit and debt" extremely or very important, a level of interest comparable to unemployment. The same poll found Romney with a broad advantage on handling the budget deficit and debt, with 54 percent saying he would do a better job handling it compared with 39 percent who chose Obama.

The results mirrored an April Washington Post/ABC News poll, which found 51 percent of Americans sided with Romney on handling the federal budget deficit, compared with 38 percent for Obama. Among independents, 60 percent preferred Romney while 29 percent thought Obama would do a better job handling it.

The White House has tried to respond. Traveling to Colorado Springs, Colo., White House press secretary Jay Carney cited an analysis by MarketWatch that said spending under Obama had grown more slowly than any president since Dwight Eisenhower.

A few hours later, Obama picked up on the piece, telling donors in Denver that his work to pay down the federal debt in a "balanced and responsible" way was "starting to appear in places ? real liberal outlets like the Wall Street Journal ? since I've been president, federal spending has risen at the lowest pace in nearly 60 years." MarketWatch is published by Dow Jones & Co., which also publishes the Wall Street Journal.

Yet, Obama's budget stewardship is open to interpretation. The debt now stands at $15.7 trillion, compared to $10.6 trillion on his inauguration day. On a dollar basis, that's the biggest ever jump in the debt. How much the debt has grown can also be measures as a percentage of what he inherited. By that measure, the debt has increased by half during the three-and-a-half year Obama administration. During President Ronald Reagan's eight-year administration, the debt nearly tripled, from about $910 billion to more than $2.6 trillion.

Still, much of the increase during Obama's tenure has been a consequence of the recession. In a poor economy, government spending increases automatically because more Americans become eligible for food stamps, unemployment assistance and Medicaid. Also, a poor economy leads to unemployment which cuts into tax revenue. As a result, deficits are inevitable as more money goes out and less comes in.

To be sure, Obama pushed through a stimulus package that cost more than $800 billion and he and President George Bush both approved spending of the $700 billion bank bailout in 2008 and 2009. But those costs are not recurrent.

"It's important to understand the reason why the debt went up by so much," said Robert Bixby of the budget watchdog group The Concord Coalition. "We certainly do have a very serious long-term debt problem in the country. We have an underlying structural imbalance between what we are promising, mostly in entitlement benefits, and what we're willing to pay for in taxes. But in the short-term there are a lot of factors that are pushing the debt up that aren't related to fiscal policy."

Add to the mix Boehner, who has said when Congress is asked to raise the nation's borrowing cap after the election, he will insist on spending cuts to offset the increase. Democratic leaders call it an irresponsible course of action, noting that the gridlock over the debt ceiling last year caused a downgrading of the U.S. government's credit rating.

All of this is aimed at unaligned, independent voters.

In turning attention to debt, Republicans are tapping a winning issue they deployed in congressional races two years ago. In October of 2010, Republican pollster Wes Anderson said, congressional campaigns shifted "away from jobs and economy to government taking us over the cliff." The emphasis proved to be a success at the ballot box.

These days, the economy remains the preeminent issue in voters' minds, but Anderson says middle-of-the-road votes are the targets of the big government message.

"The middle is angry about where we are at and they really see two villains on this stage, this play has two antagonists. Both of them are big," said Anderson, who is working on congressional and statewide political campaigns in several states that are presidential battlegrounds. "One is big business, big Wall Street, big insurance, big oil, just big, abusing the middle class, abusing small businesses, abusing the taxpayer. The other is big government ? big government wildly running up massive deficits and debt which abuse the taxpayer, the middle class and small business."

Independent voters, he said, "hold both of those central tenets to be true."

Tara Fass: Clarifying Questions for Dating Singles

After the divorce, when the time feels right to start dating again, there are a few things to keep in mind.

What is going on with another person is not always obvious on the surface. Imagine if you could gather information and therefore pay more attention to the depth of another person with some well-placed and well-intentioned questions as you get to know them.

It's better to ask these questions silently at first -- and to just be observant. Watch your date's meta-communication behaviors and body-language responses carefully, taking into account respiration, eye-contact and speech pattern. Try to hear and accept their words but verify with actions.

The first and third questions below are the biggies and contain a treasure trove of information in deciding if this is a relationship to pursue. The middle question is informational and more about potential compatibility in terms of daily routines.

The order in which these questions roll out is up to you. All three can be in play simultaneously. Are there too many red flags with any of these questions? If so, bow out as gracefully as possible while you can.

1.Foundational Questions: What is your relationship like with your mother, father and siblings? Chances are the answer is some mixture of a bittersweet work in progress. Even in the best relationships require work. You need to hear what's good as well as what's getting better. What's good and not so good in a person's family of origin is likely to be mirrored in your dating relationship.

If you progress in dating, you will likely get to know the people in the answers to the question. That's when you will be tested. What's working out with one's parents is only the start. There are also in-laws, and half- and step-children with whom you'll have adult relationships.

2. Aggregate Questions: What are your rituals? What was the name of and last time that you read a book? How many hours a week do you work, watch sports or business news on television? What's your faith practice? How about playing video or computer games and hanging out on the Internet? Do you watch or participate in porn? What are your hobbies? Where do you like to vacation?

3. Kicker Questions: Is there anyone else who thinks you are their significant other? A dear friend alerted me to this one. You would think that a person is on the market on if they are truly free, but this isn't always the case in this age of ambivalence. The person who appears free may be in fact in an ambivalent relationship. Chances are they can't tell you, but will show you and maybe tell you if you ask the right way.

With all of these questions, listen hard and watch closely for what is revealed and hidden. What is the other willing to tell you, if you can catch it?
